The transformative experience of parenting often comes with a steep learning curve, especially in the initial week. During the first week, you will observe immense joy and wonder like never before.

Whether you’re a first time parent or are adding another joy to your family, this article will give you the complete insight on how to survive your first week as a parent. From the feeding pattern to sleep schedule, explore some of the key resources you must know.

Not knowing what to do is normal

Congratulations! The little one has arrived and so is the time to be the greatest parent! The first few weeks of being a parent can be very tough. Feeling overwhelmed and failing as parents is part of the job. Do not get disheartened, instead ask for help. Ask your parents, relatives, or her nannies who are habituated in handling newborns. However, knowing a few things will help you in surviving the first week as a parent.

When to feed the baby?

There are three most common questions new parents often ask:

  • When should they feed the baby,
  • How many times should they feed them, and
  • What should be the baby’s diet? You will be guided on this by your pediatrics, but knowing a little bit more might not harm you.

In the first week, the babies will be depending on breast milk or formula. It is recommended to feed a baby at an interval of every 2 to 3 hours. Do not worry if they’re wetting their diapers constantly or pooping frequently, it is very natural.

For breastfeeding moms, you will feel your breasts are much lighter after feeding the baby. It means that your baby is sucking on well. If your baby is cranky, putting their fingers in their mouth, or crying, they might be hungry. With time you will develop a bond with your newest addition and know exactly what they are asking for.

Sleeping schedule

The next important thing a new parent must know about newborns is- how much sleep they need. 16 hours a day to be precise, obviously with a few exceptions! If your baby is not sleeping that much there is no need to worry. A few babies develop their sleeping patterns.

Ensure that the crib you are placing your baby does not have stuffed animals, too many pillows, or blankets around them. It might suffocate your baby. For parents who allow their baby to sleep in their room, don’t make them sleep with you in the bed, as you might hurt them.

How often should you bath your baby?

Bathing your baby 3 to 4 times a week for the first year is fine. Bathing your baby every day might steal away the moisture from their skin. In the initial weeks, use a sponge to bathe the little one. After the first month, you can introduce them to infant tubs. If your baby doesn’t like the introduction, go back to the wet sponge bath. After a few weeks, you can try to bathe them in the tabs once again.

Takeaway

Navigating through the struggles of first week of parenting? You’re not alone! This comprehensive guide will provide you all the insights, tips, and suggestions you need to make it through the right way.
