How parenting has undergone change over the years

Parenting, the essential process of raising and nurturing children, has undergone significant transformations throughout history. As societies evolve and adapt to new challenges and opportunities, parenting approaches have also changed. From traditional authoritarian models to inclusive and child-centered practices, parenting has become dynamic and diverse. This article explores the evolution of parenting, highlighting shifts in parental attitudes, roles, and practices.

Shift from Authoritarian to Authoritative Parenting:

In the past, authoritarian parenting prevailed, emphasizing strict discipline, unquestionable authority, and a hierarchical parent-child relationship. Parents focused on obedience and conformity, relying on punishment for control. However, authoritative parenting gradually emerged, encouraging a balance between structure and warmth.

Authoritative parents set clear expectations and boundaries while fostering open communication, autonomy, and mutual respect. This shift reflects a growing understanding of the significance of positive parent-child relationships and their long-term impact on a child’s development.

Emphasis on Emotional Nurturing:

Another significant change in parenting is the increased recognition of children’s emotional needs. Previously, emotional expression and support were often neglected as societal norms emphasized self-reliance and emotional restraint. However, modern parenting encourages emotional nurturing since it recognises how strongly a child’s emotional health affects the rest of their development.

Nowadays, parents actively encourage and accept their children’s emotions while also providing a safe environment for communication. This change promotes healthy emotional growth and strengthens parent-child relationships.

Parental Involvement and Gender Roles:

Earlier the Father was the main earning member of the family and Mothers were supposed to take care of the children. However, societal changes have challenged these rigid roles, leading to increased paternal involvement in parenting.

Gender equality movements, heightened awareness of the benefits of shared parenting, and evolving workplace dynamics have contributed to a more egalitarian approach. Fathers now actively participate in child-rearing activities, sharing responsibilities and taking on nurturing roles. This shift results in more balanced and enriched parenting experiences for both children and parents.

Adapting to Technological Advancements:

Technological advancements have profoundly influenced parenting, bringing forth substantial changes. The introduction of smartphones, social media, and the internet has presented parents with fresh obstacles when it comes to overseeing their children’s online activities. Cyberbullying, excessive screen time, and online safety now loom large as pressing issues.

Consequently, parenting has undergone adjustments as parents diligently educate themselves about the perils of the digital realm, establish guidelines for technology utilization, and encourage digital literacy. Furthermore, digital platforms have opened up novel channels for parental assistance and the exchange of information, facilitating easier connections with fellow parents and improved access to resources.

Inclusive and Respectful Parenting:

In recent years, the importance of inclusive and respectful parenting has been increasingly highlighted. Parents are now urged to create an environment that celebrates individuality and values differences, acknowledging the diverse needs and identities of children. This approach involves embracing diversity across various aspects, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and abilities.

Parents aim to expose their children to different cultures, fostering empathy, tolerance, and social awareness. By practicing inclusive parenting, a sense of belonging is nurtured, aiding children in becoming compassionate and inclusive individuals.
