Taking care of a premature baby is always a matter of concern. If your baby is delivered prematurely, it is obvious that you will be concerned about how to take care of him. However, it is not at all a matter of concern anymore. Premature babies who are born around three weeks before the expected date are prone to medical issues such as anemia and respiratory stress disorder.

If you are concerned about the health of your newborn premature baby, then you don’t have to worry at all. We cover essential parenting tips for taking care of premature babies in this post.

Taking your baby home

You might be worried when the time actually comes when you can take your baby home. However, it is an advantageous situation for you as parents and for your child as the chances of infection in the hospital premises are always high. At home, your baby learns to feed itself and gets familiar with the environment of your home.

Always remember that the hospital won’t allow you to take your premature baby home until the doctors believe that you and your baby are in the safe zone. If you are returning from the hospital, it indicates that your baby’s health is stable and normal.

The proper temperature

There is no denying that the temperature around your baby affects the most. Maintaining proper temperature is indeed important and the right approach to taking care of your baby at home. If you live in a hot and humid environment, avoid using too many blankets. On the contrary, you must use blankets or extra layers of clothes if you live in a cold environment. Always remember that the optimum temperature is 20-23 degrees Celsius.

Breastfeeding your baby

Breastfeeding is the most important part of parenthood. You should always breastfeed your baby for his healthy growth and development. Since breast milk is easy to digest, it gives your baby the required strength. If your premature baby is unable to breastfeed, make sure you start feeding 10 minutes a day and gradually increase the time. Ensure your baby has a sound sleep at home after a feed.

Maintaining skin contact

Maintaining skin contact is important to keep your kid healthy. Ensure your baby is bonded to your body and skin-to-skin contact has several benefits. This practice will minimize the discomfort of any kind that your baby may experience. This approach is helpful in healthy weight growth, regulating heart rates, aids in breastfeeding, and aids with respiration. Stay around your kid and make him feel comfortable.

Keep things clean

You are home now and that does not mean that your baby’s immune system is completely developed. Help him to stay healthy and away from medical issues. Make sure all the guests wash their hands before holding the kid and you keep the surroundings clean and sanitized for your kid.

So, these are some common parenting tips that you must follow if you have a premature baby.  These tips can actually help you keep track of your baby’s milestones.
