How to Increase Your Chances of Having Twins

By Dr. Akanksha Priya|4 - 5 mins read| August 05, 2025

The idea of having twins fascinates many people. Whether it’s for family planning reasons or simply the magic of raising two children at once, some hopeful parents wonder: Can I increase my chances of having twins naturally or medically?

While nature plays the biggest role, certain biological, dietary, and fertility-related factors can slightly raise the odds of conceiving twins, especially fraternal (non-identical) twins.

Types of Twins: A Quick Science Primer

Before diving into strategies, it’s important to understand the two types of twins:

  • Fraternal twins (dizygotic): Occur when two separate eggs are fertilized by two different sperm. This is the type that can sometimes be influenced by genetics or stimulation.
  • Identical twins (monozygotic): Result from a single fertilized egg splitting into two embryos. This is a random, unpredictable event and cannot be influenced.

Most of the advice you’ll find applies only to fraternal twins.

1. Family History and Genetics

If you’re hoping for twins, your own maternal lineage matters more than your partner’s. A woman is more likely to release more than one egg (hyperovulation) if it runs in her family.

  • Having a mother or sister who had fraternal twins increases your odds.
  • Genetic predisposition doesn’t influence identical twins, they are random events.

Twin fact: You’re twice as likely to have fraternal twins if you’re a twin yourself or if they run in your family.

2. Age Matters: Women Over 30 Have Slightly Higher Odds

Women aged 35 to 40 are more likely to conceive fraternal twins. This is because:

  • The ovaries may release more than one egg as fertility begins to decline.
  • FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) levels naturally increase with age, which may result in multiple ovulations.

However, age also comes with a decline in overall fertility and increased pregnancy risks, so this is not a recommended strategy, only a biological observation.

3. Dietary Factors: Dairy and Yams May Play a Role

Research from Nigeria and the U.S. has linked certain foods to higher twin rates:

  • Dairy products: Women who consume dairy, especially from cows treated with growth hormones, may be more likely to have twins.
  • Yams and cassava: Certain plant compounds found in wild yams may stimulate the ovaries to release more eggs.

A study by Dr. Gary Steinman showed that women who ate more dairy were five times more likely to conceive twins.

While not definitive, adjusting your diet might nudge your chances slightly.

4. Higher BMI and Height

Several studies suggest that:

  • Taller women are more likely to have twins.
  • Women with a BMI above 30 may have increased chances due to higher estrogen levels, which can lead to multiple ovulations.

Note: Obesity brings other health risks and complications in pregnancy, so weight should never be increased solely to raise twin chances.

5. Fertility Treatments and Medications

This is the most effective method for conceiving twins, though it’s often done for medical reasons, not just by choice.

  • Clomiphene citrate (Clomid): Encourages the release of multiple eggs.
  • Letrozole: Used in PCOS, also stimulates ovulation.
  • Gonadotropin injections: Directly stimulate ovaries for multiple egg release.
  • IVF (In Vitro Fertilization): Transferring two or more embryos can result in twins or higher multiples.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) account for over 30% of twin pregnancies in some countries.

However, doctors now aim to reduce multiple pregnancies to avoid high-risk complications, so this is not encouraged unless medically necessary.

6. Having More Children (High Parity)

The more children you’ve had, the greater your odds of having twins in later pregnancies. This is especially true for:

  • Women who have had three or more pregnancies already
  • Those with a history of multiple births

This may be related to improved uterine receptivity and changes in hormone levels.

7. Discontinuing Birth Control Pills

Some women may hyper-ovulate after stopping hormonal contraception, especially if the cycle returns with irregular hormone fluctuations. While not guaranteed, some anecdotal cases report twin pregnancies after going off the pill.

This is not reliable or well-studied, but may play a minor role.

8. Timing and Frequency of Intercourse

While no evidence supports specific timing or positions to conceive twins, having frequent intercourse during the fertile window may increase the chances of fertilizing two eggs if you ovulate more than one.

Ovulation tracking using basal body temperature or LH surge kits can help optimize timing.

What Does Not Increase Your Chances of Twins?

Avoid falling for these common myths:

  • Taking folic acid alone (it helps fetal development, not twin conception)
  • Specific sexual positions
  • Moon phases or fertility charms
  • Eating pineapple or drinking milk at midnight

These have no scientific basis and shouldn’t replace evidence-based advice.

Risks Associated With Twin Pregnancies

It’s important to remember that twin pregnancies carry higher risks for both mother and babies, including:

Always consult your gynecologist before pursuing any fertility interventions.

Conclusion

While genetics and luck are the biggest factors in having twins, certain lifestyle, dietary, and medical interventions may modestly improve your odds, especially for fraternal twins. If you’re genuinely considering twins, speak to a fertility specialist to understand your body’s unique profile and options.

Above all, healthy conception and a safe pregnancy, whether singleton or twins, should remain the top priority.
