Black Sesame (Black Till) Laddu Recipe

Black sesame laddus, often referred to as Ellu Urundai, are an earthy and iron-rich traditional sweet known for their striking dark color and deep, nutty aroma. This single-serving recipe pairs the intense flavor of black sesame seeds with mineral-rich jaggery to create a snack that is as medicinal as it is delicious. Because black sesame seeds are typically nuttier and slightly more bitter than white ones, they provide a more complex flavor profile that is highly prized in Ayurvedic cooking.

What Ingredients do I Need for Black Sesame (Black Till) Laddu?

  • 3 tbsp Sesame seeds ( fresh ) - default
  • 1 tsp Ghee ( fresh ) - default
  • 1.5 tbsp Jaggery, Cane ( fresh ) - default
  • 1 pinch Cardamom powder ( fresh ) - default

Instructions: How to Make Black Sesame (Black Till) Laddu

  • Roast
Dry roast the black sesame seeds in a heavy-bottomed pan over low-medium heat for about 3–4 minutes. Watch closely; they are harder to see browning, so listen for the popping sound and a nutty aroma.
  • Syrup
In a separate small pan, heat jaggery with water. Once it melts and thickens to a sticky consistency (the "hard ball" stage for a crunchier laddu), turn off the heat.
  • Combine
Mix the roasted seeds and cardamom powder into the jaggery syrup until thoroughly combined.
  • Form
Let it cool for 60 seconds, then grease your palms with ghee and quickly roll into two small spheres while the mixture is still warm and pliable.
